Two presidents say Montenegro-Turkey relations are friendly
Zagreb, 28 August 2021 (Hina/MIA) - Turkey excellently understands a deficit of stability in the Western Balkans and therefore it insists on the open-door policy of NATO and the EU for this region, Montenegrin President Milo Đukanović said in Podgorica on Saturday after he received his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan.
Erdogan has been the first head of state of Turkey to visit Montenegro.
Addressing a news conference, Đukanović said that this visit would be "a new impulse" to the bilateral relations.
"I have notified the guest about what is the reality of the political life in Montenegro and informed him that Montenegro is a stable country," Đukanović said.
He recalled that in 1879 the first Turkish embassy was opened in the Montenegrin capital city of Cetinje and that in 1885 a celebration was held to mark the Ottoman Empire's Day.
Erdogan said that Turkey was among top ten countries considering the investments in Montenegro.
He said he was hopeful that Montenegro would soon become an EU member-state. He recalled Ankara's support to Montenegro's NATO membership bid. This country joined the alliance in June 2017.
Erdogan, who arrived in Podgorica from Sarajevo, also recalled that Turkey was one of the first countries to recognise the independence of this Adriatic country.
He pointed out that hundreds of Montenegrin undergraduates had been awarded scholarships for their education at Turkish universities.
On Saturday afternoon, Erdogan is due to be received by Parliament Speaker Aleksa Bečić and Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić.
