Berlin, 14 April 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Record winners Sevilla fought back from two goals down to a late 2-2 draw at Manchester United thanks to a pair of own goals in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday.
Marcel Sabitzer, on loan at Old Trafford from Bayern Munich, netted in the 15th and 20th minute to put United 2-0 up.
But the hosts were then wasteful and Sevilla fought back from own goals by Tyrell Malacia in the 84th and Harry Maguire in stoppage time to leave the six-time winners well placed for next week's return leg at home.
"It was like a rollercoaster game. We had to finish the game off and at the end it's a draw and it's not what we wanted," Sabitzer told BT Sport.
"We had the chances. We controlled the game but unfortunately we gave easy goals away. We cannot concede these kinds of goals and we're really disappointed now. In a competition like this you have to be focused until the end. Two stupid goals. When you are 2-0 up at home you have to get it done."
Feyenoord Rotterdam beat Roma 1-0 from Mats Wieffer after Lorenzo Pellegrini's first-half penalty kick for Jose Mourinho's visitors hit the left post.
Juventus edged Sporting 1-0 from Federico Gatti; and Royal Union Saint-Gilloise drew 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen, with Florian Wirtz in the 82nd cancelling out the Belgians' opener from Victor Boniface.
"We can be happy to get at least a draw. He hoped to be in a better position for the return leg. But I am convinced we will win the return leg," Wirtz told broadcasters RTL.
Having eliminated Barcelona and Real Betis in the previous rounds, United almost had a dream start against their third Spanish opponents in a row but Jaden Sancho was offside before finding the net less than 30 seconds after the kick-off.
Sabitzer opened the scoring off Bruno Fernandes' defence-splitting pass in the 15th, and added a second five minutes later in similar fashion through the centre, set up this time by Anthony Martial.
The hosts came close to a third when Antony's shot hit the crossbar, and several further chances went begging to raise the lead.
Instead, Malacia deflected Jesus Navas' cross into his own net in the 84th, and Youssef En-Nesyri's header then hit Maguire in stoppage time to leave Old Trafford stunned and Sevilla well-placed to oust United, like they did in the 2020 semi-finals and the 2018 Champions League last 16.
The Conference League first leg quarter-finals were also played, with West Ham United held 1-1 at KAA Gent after winning all eight previous games in the competition.
Danny Ings gave West Ham the lead on the stroke of half-time but Hugo Cuypers levelled for the Belgian hosts in the 57th. Gent almost stole a late win when Gift Orban's overhead kick hit the crossbar, and a stoppage time red card for their defender Kamil Piatkowski was rescinded after a video review.
Fiorentina triumphed 4-1 at Lech Poznan, Basel and Nice drew 2-2, and Anderlecht beat Alkmaar 2-0.
