Tuzla care home fire victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning

Sarajevo, 6 November 2025 (Hina/MIA) - All residents who died in a fire at a care home for the elderly in Tuzla on Tuesday night were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, autopsy results released on Thursday by the cantonal prosecutor's office show.

Six men and six women died, all residents of the home, and preliminary autopsies confirmed they succumbed to asphyxiation caused by carbon monoxide, said spokesman for the prosecutor's office Admir Arnautović.

The oldest victim was born in 1929 and the youngest in 1958.

Another woman, also a resident, died later at the Tuzla Clinical Center after being admitted in critical condition and placed on a ventilator, bringing the direct death toll to 12.

Police earlier confirmed that another resident had died on Tuesday, but before the fire broke out, so is not counted among the direct victims.

The cantonal prosecutor's office is awaiting reports from criminal police and experts in electrical and fire safety and workplace protection.

"We will inform the public about the cause of the fire once expert findings and investigators' reports are analyzed," Arnautović said.
