Trump wants licences of US broadcasters ABC, NBC revoked for bias

Washington, 25 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump is calling for regulators to withdraw the licences of broadcasters ABC and NBC due to their allegedly unbalanced reporting.

In posts on his Truth Social platform late on Sunday, Trump wrote that despite his high popularity, the channels spread "97% BAD STORIES" about him and reported unfairly on Republicans.

The president argued many people believe that the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) - the country's telecommunications regulator - should revoke the channels' licences.

"I would be totally in favor of that because they are so biased and untruthful, an actual threat to our Democracy!!!" Trump continued.

He also suggested that the broadcasters, which he described as "FAKE NEWS," should actually be paying millions of dollars a year in licence fees for "the privilege of using the most valuable airwaves anywhere at anytime!!!"

FCC chairman Brendan Carr, a Republican, was appointed by Trump shortly after his election in November.

The president accuses the news channels of the ABC and NBC networks, as well as CBS and CNN, of being the main mouthpieces of the Democrats and slandering his conservative politics.

He is also campaigning against various media whose reporting runs counter to his views.

Most recently, the Wall Street Journal was barred from travelling on the government plane following a report on Trump's contact with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Associated Press is also still not allowed to fly on Air Force One after the US news agency refused to adopt Trump's new name for the Gulf of Mexico - "Gulf of America."
