Trump urges Russia and Ukraine to 'stop where they are'

Washington, 18 October 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has called on Russia and Ukraine to halt the war immediately, saying enough blood has been shed.

"They should stop where they are," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

He did not mention the long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles that Kiev had requested for its defence against Russia - a topic that had been planned for discussion. The US position on the matter remains unclear.

"Let both claim Victory, let History decide!" Trump said in his post, adding that it was time to stop the killing and make a deal.

"No more shooting, no more Death, no more vast and unsustainable sums of money spent."

When asked by reporters about Trump's remarks, Zelensky agreed, saying, "The president is right and we have to stop where we are. This is important to stop where we are and then to speak."

"Both sides have to stop and between us, it's about [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. We didn't begin this war," Zelensky added.

Russia has been waging a devastating war of aggression against Ukraine for more than three and a half years.

Trump has positioned himself as a mediator in the conflict and said on Thursday that he plans to meet Putin in Budapest "probably over the next two weeks."
