Beirut/Washington, 19 March 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has threatened to "massively blow up the entirety of" South Pars, the largest gas field in the world, which Iran shares with Qatar.
South Pars is located off the shore of Asaluyeh in Iran's Bushehr province. The region is central to Iran's energy sector and accounts for around 70% of the country's domestic gas supply.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that Israel hit "a relatively small section of the whole" gas field unbeknown to the US or Qatar.
"Unfortunately, Iran did not know this, or any of the pertinent facts pertaining to the South Pars attack, and unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar's LNG Gas [Liquefied Natural Gas] facility."
Trump went on to say that Israel would not attack South Pars again "unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar," adding that in that case the US "will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before."
"I do not want to authorize this level of violence and destruction because of the long term implications that it will have on the future of Iran," Trump continued, "but if Qatar's LNG is again attacked, I will not hesitate to do so."
Minutes before Trump posted the message, Qatari authorities reported a new Iranian attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City, where important facilities for the production and shipping of LNG are located.
