Washington, 7 March 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has threatened Russia with "large scale" sanctions and tariffs until a ceasefire and peace agreement is reached with Ukraine.

In a post to his Truth Social platform on Friday, the same day that Ukraine's energy grid was bombarded by aerial attacks, Trump noted that Russia was "pounding Ukraine on the battlefield."

Due to this, Trump wrote that he was "strongly considering large scale banking sanctions, sanctions, and tariffs on Russia."

He called for the two sides to come to the negotiating table and hash out a "final settlement agreement on peace."

The president's criticism of Moscow comes amid Washington's strained relations with Kiev following a disastrous visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House last week.

The two leaders' public blow-up led to Trump suspending military aid and intelligence sharing with Kiev.
