Washington, 4 March 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with a further escalation in the trade war, following Washington's introduction of 25% tariffs on goods from the neighbouring country.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had in response announced counter-tariffs of the same amount on certain US goods.
In a post on his network Truth Social, Trump once again mocked the neighbouring country's prime minister as "Governor Trudeau" - relegating the country to the status of a US state. "Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the US, our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!" Trump said.
Trudeau, in a speech, rallied his country for a trade war with the United States and threatened Washington with further tough measures in the tariff dispute. He also personally addressed Trump: "Now it's not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you're a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do."
