Trump threatens EU with tariffs of 25% on cars, 'all other things'

Washington, 26 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump threatened on Wednesday to impose tariffs of 25% on imported goods from the European Union, including cars.

"We have made a decision and we’ll be announcing it very soon," Trump said during a cabinet meeting in response to a journalist's question. Then he added: "It will be 25%, generally speaking, and that’ll be on cars and all other things."

He again accused the Europeans of taking advantage of the United States.

Trump recently signed an order to raise tariffs wherever the US currently has lower tariffs than its trading partners. According to the White House, it does not matter if they are strategic competitors like China or allies like the European Union.

The tariffs are not yet in place.

Trump has repeatedly used the threat of tariffs as a negotiating tactic, throwing around figures. A few days ago he said he wanted to impose a 25% tariff on car imports into the US. A concrete announcement was promised for April 2.
