Trump says US will to pause Iran attacks for two weeks

Washington, 8 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump said he would suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks if Tehran immediately reopened the Strait of Hormuz, announcing what he described as a "double sided" ceasefire in a post on his platform Truth Social.

"Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," Trump wrote.

Trump had earlier threatened to attack Iran's energy sector and infrastructure, including bridges, if the country's leadership failed to agree to a deal or reopen the vital waterway, a key artery for global oil and gas flows. He had set Tehran a deadline of 0000 GMT on Wednesday.
