Trump meets Zelensky in New York, says Ukraine been 'through hell'

New York, 27 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with former US president Donald Trump during his trip to the United States.

Their meeting at the Republican presidential candidate's Trump Tower skyscraper in New York comes amid worries in Kiev that a second Trump term would see US military support for Ukraine diminish.

"It's an honour to have the president with us," Trump said as the two went into the their talks.

"It has to end at some point. It has to end," he said of the war.

"He's gone through hell," Trump said of Zelensky. "His country has gone through hell."

"I think we have common view that the war in Ukraine has to be stopped and Putin can't win," Zelensky told reporters, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump had announced the meeting on Thursday night at a press conference, saying Zelensky had requested it.

The last time the two met face-to-face was about five years ago - before Putin's all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Trump, who is seeking to be re-elected to the White House in November, is critical of the massive financial and military support the US provides to Ukraine.

He has repeatedly said that if he wins, the war would quickly come to an end. He has never given details about how he would go about achieving this.

Zelensky addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. On Thursday, he met with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House.

Harris, who is battling Trump for the presidency, promised her "unwavering" support for Ukraine in its defence against Russia.

Zelensky's meeting with Trump had appeared unlikely after scathing remarks made by Trump at a rally in North Carolina on Wednesday.

"We continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refuses to make a deal," Trump said of the Ukrainian leader. "So many dead people, any deal, even the worst deal, would have been better than what we have right now."
