Skopje, 19 July 2024 (MIA) — Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski met Friday with UNHCR's Representative in North Macedonia Gabriel Gualano de Godoy.

According to an official press release, meeting participants discussed the excellent cooperation of the Interior Ministry with the UNHCR and the results achieved so far as well as current issues and future cooperation plans.

"We both highlighted the fact that Macedonia as a country, on many occasions, has shown solidarity and humanity in dealing with humanitarian crises that have caused displacement and refugees," Minister Toshkovski is quoted as saying in the release.

The UNHCR representative pointed out the problem of people who were still without citizenship. The interior minister said the authorities would do all they could to solve this problem as soon as possible.

"One of our plans is to strengthen the asylum seeking system through standard operational procedures for the border police to alleviate asylum seekers' problems," Toshkovski said.

Meeting participants expressed their commitment to further promoting cooperation with the UNHCR.

Gualano De Godoy thanked the state on its cooperation, noting it was a leader in protecting refugee rights in the region and beyond. mr/
