Top EU diplomat says 'carnage' among Gaza civilians 'unacceptable'

Brussels, 1 March 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The European Union's foreign affairs chief has said the deaths of civilians queueing for aid in the northern Gaza Strip were "totally unacceptable."

"I am horrified by news of yet another carnage among civilians in Gaza desperate for humanitarian aid," Josep Borrell posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "These deaths are totally unacceptable."

Borrell went on to say that depriving people of food aid constitutes violation of international humanitarian law, as he called for "unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza."

The Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza accused Israeli soldiers of shooting dead 104 people and injuring 760 on Thursday as aid was being handed out to Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army said civilians had stormed the aid lorries and dozens of people had been trampled on. It said an investigation was under way.
