Three injured in stabbing at Gare de Lyon station in Paris

Paris, 3 February 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Three people were injured in a stabbing at the Gare de Lyon railway station in Paris on Saturday morning.

Emergency service staff overpowered the attacker, according to the broadcaster BFMTV and Le Figaro newspaper, citing the police.

One person was seriously injured and two suffered minor injuries.

The people were stabbed in a waiting room in the station's underground level.

The attacker used an Italian driving licence to identify himself.

The motives for the attack remain unclear.

The Gare de Lyon is the main long-distance railway station for southbound trains.

French railway stations have seen several attacks in recent years, but none due to terrorism, however.

France issued its highest terrorism alert level in October after a teacher was fatally stabbed by a young Islamist in northern France. The alert level was lowered again in mid-January.
