Thousands protest in Serbia four months after deadly roof collapse

Belgrade, 1 March 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Thousands of people have once again taken to the streets of Serbia to protest the government of President Aleksandar Vučić.

They accuse the government of corruption and negligence after the canopy of a train station collapsed in the city of Novi Sad exactly four months ago, killing 15 people.

Demonstrators filled the streets of Serbia's third largest city, Niš, 250 kilometres south-east of Belgrade, on Saturday. Serbian media reported that protesters were arriving by car, bicycle, motorbike and on foot.

The rally in Niš is scheduled to last well past midnight, with a festival-style programme including concerts and street theatre performances.

Protests like this have been taking place in many parts of the country since the disaster in Novi Sad on November 1.

In the capital, Belgrade, 15-minute moments of silence in honour of the dead are already part of everyday life, with road traffic often stopped at intersections.
