This is a matter for the competent authorities to resolve, says U.S. Embassy in response to Ruskovska’s call
Skopje, 4 August 2022 (MIA) – The U.S. Embassy is committed to promoting the rule of law in North Macedonia and supports efforts of the authorities and the judiciary to ensure transparency and accountability within institutions, the U.S. Embassy in Skopje has said in a response submitted to Telma TV regarding public prosecutor Vilma Ruskovska’s call to foreign embassies and international organizations.
“It appears this issue is an ongoing process and a matter for the competent authorities to resolve,” the U.S. Embassy has said.
Vilma Ruskovska, the Head of the Prosecution for Organized Crime and Corruption, has called on all relevant institutions in the country as well as all international institutions and embassies, most notably the U.S. Embassy and the EU Delegation, “once and for all to check the facts and make it clear who is fighting crime in this country and who is committing the crime.”
In a written statement reacting to yesterday’s press briefing held by Financial Police Director Arafat Muaremi, Ruskovska points out that pressure exerted by a government-appointed official on prosecutors for organized crime, as well as the interference in their case, is appalling.
“Macedonia is neither a dictatorship nor a monarchy. The will of some current or former government officials shouldn’t dominate in order prosecutors to turn a blind eye to any crime, even the one committed by top echelons of the government,” says Ruskovska in the statement.
