Thailand and Cambodia to hold talks as US pushes for ceasefire

Bangkok, 28 July 2025 (dpa/MIA) - International pressure is mounting on Thailand and Cambodia to end border clashes that forced over 100,000 people to flee, ahead of a high-level meeting between the two countries' leaders on Monday.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged an immediate ceasefire in a Sunday post on X, saying US State Department officials were on the ground in Malaysia to support peace efforts.

Rubio and US President Donald Trump have both spoken with their counterparts in Thailand and Cambodia, the state secretary said. "We want this conflict to end as soon as possible," he added.

Heavy fighting broke out on Thursday along the Thai-Cambodian border and has continued since, resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides. Each side has accused the other of starting the violence.

A summit between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's interim Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is expected yo take place in the afternoon in Putrajaya, Malaysia, which currently holds the rotating chair of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Hun Manet said on Facebook that Chinese officials would also attend. The meeting is hosted by Malaysia and co-organized by the United States, he said.

On Saturday, Trump said on Truth Social that both countries had agreed to meet and warned that planned US tariffs would remain in place unless fighting stops.

Meanwhile, Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn cancelled public events marking his 73rd birthday, according to Thai public broadcaster PBS, saying national efforts must focus on security and the defence of sovereignty.
