Ten-man Milan and Atalanta crash in Champions League; Bayern escape

Berlin, 19 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Ten-man AC Milan paid the price for Theo Hernandez' dismissal for diving when they crashed out of the Champions League last-16 play-offs against Feyenoord on Tuesday, while Bayern Munich had a last-gasp escape against Celtic.
Atalanta were another Italian surprise casualties against Club Brugge and Benfica survived against Monaco.
Milan went out 2-1 on aggregate from a 1-1 at the night at San Siro, with the Dutch cancelling out Milan's first-minute lead from former Feyenoord player Santiago Gimenez after the 51st-minute ejection of Hernandez from Julian Carranzo.
Alphonso Davies struck in stoppage time to give Bayern a 1-1 with Celtic and see the six-time winners remain on course towards the May 31 final in their home stadium 3-2 from both legs. Former Bayern reserve team player Nicolas Kühn had scored for the Glasgow visitors who were very close to forcing extra time.
Europa League holders Atalanta were beaten 5-2 from both legs against Brugge. Chemsdine Chalbi grabbed a brace in a stunning 3-1 victory in Bergamo while Ademola Lookman missed a penalty for the hosts who had captain Rafael Toloi dismissed late on.
Benfica came from behind twice to draw 3-3 with Monaco in a Lisbon thriller to advance 4-3 on aggregate.
Feyenoord, whose Givairo Read was red-carded after the final whistle, advance into a first ever Champions League era last-16 tie against either the other Milan team, Inter, or England's Arsenal.
Brugge will play French side Lille or Aston Villa, Bayern are up against fellow German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid, and Benfica play top seeds Liverpool or Barcelona.
The other four games are on Wednesday, highlighted by record winners and title holders Real Madrid v Manchester City, with Real 3-2 up.
The last-16 draw is on Friday.
More woes for Milan
Seven-time European champions Milan suffered another big setback in a season in which they languish in seventh in Serie A.
Things had looked promising at first as less than 40 seconds had elapsed when Gimenez headed into the net after Malick Thiaw had nodded a cross from Christian Pulisic back across the goalmouth.
Gimenez did not celebrate out of respect for his ex-club he left last month.
Hernandez hit the outside left post but the momentum completely changed when he had to go in the 51st over a second yellow card he received for diving in the Feyenoord penalty area.
Feyenoord, who had rarely threatened until then, made the most of it as they were level from Carranza's thumping header in the 73rd off Hugo Bueno's cross - and then held on.
"We were controlling the game, but the match changed in the second half. It's difficult to take, because given how dominantly we started we should have won," Milan's Kyle Walker told Sky TV.
Bayern's lucky escape
In Munich, Bayern had an early attempt from Serge Gnabry blocked but Celtic were far from intimidated and soon made their presence felt.
Callum McGregor aimed wide from a left angle, and Raphael Guerreiro cleared a shot from former Bayern reserve team player Nicolas Kühn in front of the goal-line, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer beaten.
Harry Kane hit the crossbar for Bayern shortly before half-time but didn't return for the second half.
Celtic were rewarded for their efforts in the 61st when Kühn converted off Daizan Maida, with Bayern defender Kim Minjae not looking good.
Bayern pressed for the equalizer to avoid extra time, and it came in the fourth minute off stoppage time when Davies netted after goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had saved a Leon Goretzka header.
"That's the Champions League. We played against a strong Celtic. We are happy to advance. It isn't easy. We are playing so many matches," Davies told Prime Video.
Ruthless Brugge
Atalanta had lost 2-1 in Belgium on a controversial late penalty, and Brugge heaped more misery on them when Chemsdine Chalbi fired them ahead in the third minute into the far corner.
Ruthless Brugge hit twice more before half-time from Chalbi and Ferran Jutgla.
Lookman came on for the second half and slid in to start the comeback mission seconds after the restart. He had a golden opportunity for a second but Simon Mignolet saved his weak penalty in the 61st, and Toloi then saw red for losing his temper.
Benfica survive Monaco
Benfica drew first blood in the 22nd from Kerem Aktürkoglu but Monaco were level 10 minutes later from Takumi Minamino's shot into the near corner.
The French league side continued to press, and Eliesse Ben Seghir fired into the bottom corner in the 51st to lock the tie at 2-2 overall with a 2-1 lead.
Vangelis Pavlidis gave Benfica back the edge with a 76th-minute penalty, Monaco went ahead again 3-2 from substitute George Ilenikhena, but Orkun Kokcu's 3-3 in the 84th was eventually enough for Benfica to edge the tie 4-3.
