Sofia, 30 April 2023 (MIA) - The district court in Burgas remanded in custody a 14-year-old M.A., who has been arrested for the murder of a 49-year-old Macedonian citizen in Sunny Beach, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

The Bulgarian Public Prosecutor's Office charged the juvenile of committing the crime of murder with intent, while his lawyer said that he acted in self-defense.

At today's court hearing, the Prosecutor's Office also submitted a report from the police in Nessebar that the suspect is being investigated for another crime.

This is not his first attempt to assault someone, prosecutor Ivan Kirkov said. According to him, there is evidence indicating that the suspect committed the murder with intent.

The prosecutor also said that there is evidence that money was taken from the victim, which the suspect used to pay back a loan taken from a pawn shop in Sunny Beach.

During the interrogation, the mother of the suspect said that she found 1,400 BGN in his bag, which he told her was given to him by a "drunk tourist behind a restaurant". The brother of the suspected minor also confirmed this statement.

His lawyer, Radostin Penev, on the other hand, requested that the suspect be released from custody, stating that he cooperated with the police, as well as that “the murder was committed in self-defense.”

Penev also said that there was no evidence that the suspect tried to hide the body, adding that someone else could have done it.

The juvenile suspect said in the court that he was sorry for what he had done.

Bulgarian TV channel bTV, citing Burgas Police sources, reports that a 14-year-old has been arrested for the murder of the Macedonian citizen.

The body was found on Thursday, and it was determined it belongs to a 49-year-old Macedonian citizen who entered Bulgaria on January 24, 2023, at the Gjueshevo border crossing. According to bTV, the police determined that the murder was committed by a 14-year-old boy from Nessebar.

In the press release, the MFA said the Macedonian Embassy in Sofia is maintaining regular communication with the relevant authorities in Bulgaria, and expects to receive additional information about the case, about which the Ministry will additionally inform the public.
