Stoiljkovikj: Commemorating Romani Language Day preserves and nurtures cultural markers of Roma community

Skopje, 5 November 2024 (MIA) - By commemorating November 5 - World Day of Romani Language we are contributing to the preservation and nurturing of cultural markers of the Roma community, says Deputy PM and Minister for Community Relations Ivan Stoiljkovikj.

"On this day we celebrate Romani language and culture, as an integral part of the global multicultural community in which we live. We not only preserve Roma tradition and folklore, but also enrich our common history and future, opening the way for even greater mutual understanding and respect," says Stoilkovikj in the note.

He adds that World Day of Romani Language promotes language, culture and education, and is celebrated every year on November 5 since 2009 when it was first recognized as minority language according to the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. At Croatia's request in 2015, UNESCO declared November 5 - World Day of Romani Language.

"Accepting our differences makes us unique, and nurturing them is our contribution to the future of the society we live in - a multicultural society we should be proud of," stresses Stoiljkovikj. ssh/ik/
