State media: Israeli airstrike kills three people in southern Lebanon

Tel Aviv/Beirut, 5 March 2024 (dpa/MIA) - At least three people were killed on Tuesday when an Israeli airstrike hit their home in southern Lebanon, state-run media said.

The National News Agency (NNA) said a two-storey house was targeted in the Israeli airstrike on the village of Houla, which led to its complete destruction.

The strike killed the owner of the house, Hassan Ali Qasim Hussein, as well as his wife and son, the news agency said.

NNA reported Hussein, a farmer, had decided to stay in his home despite daily shelling of the village by Israel.

According to a Lebanese security source the raid came shortly after the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement claimed its fighters hit an Israeli position in Rweisat al-Alam close to the Lebanese border.

Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, there has been daily shelling on the Lebanese-Israeli border, with deaths recorded on both sides. Tens of thousands of residents in both countries have left their homes because of the fighting.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Galant recently announced that he would increase military pressure on Hezbollah in response to its daily attacks on Israel until the Shiite militia withdraws from the border.
