Sri Lankan ministers resign as political crisis intensifies

Several Sri Lankan government ministers resigned on Sunday, just hours after the country’s president and prime minister offered to step down to appease protesters angry at their handling of an economic crisis.

At least four cabinet ministers handed in their resignations and several others due to follow suit, a government official said without specifying the names of those in question. Hundreds of protesters continued to occupy the president’s official residence, his office and the prime minister’s office in the capital, Colombo. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence in Colombo was burned down on Saturday and three suspects have been arrested, police said. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa informed the country's parliamentary speaker that he would be stepping down on July 13, while the prime minister offered to resign, but failed to give a date. Protests have been ongoing since April as hardships resulting from shortages of fuel, gas, medicine, fertilizer and food worsened amid an unprecedented economic crisis. The president’s brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa, had already resigned as the country's prime minister on May 9 following a wave of violence.
