Skopje, 5 August 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi met Monday with the newly appointed U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Nicole Varnes.
U.S. Ambassador Angela Aggeler also attended the meeting, whereat participants discussed U.S. support to North Macedonia so far in all key processes for the country since the independence, the Parliament said in a press release.
Gashi welcomed Varnes, wishing her good health and successful mission.
He extended gratitude for the cooperation and support from the United States, pointing out that it has a strategic significance and longstanding history, starting from the country's independence to its NATO membership.
The Parliament Speaker expressed confidence that the relations between the United States and North Macedonia will continue to develop in the same spirit.
Interlocutors also exchanged views on the possibilities to deepen cooperation at parliamentary level, through bilateral visits and drawing on experience from the U.S. Congress. In that context, Speaker Gashi pointed to the need to strengthen the supervisory role of the Assembly in relation to the executive power, mentioning the practice of public hearings in the U.S. Congress.
Ambassador Aggeler thanked Gashi for his engagement since elected Parliament Speaker, pointing out that the Parliament plays a very important role in strengthening citizens' trust in the institutions of the state.
In addition, participants in the meeting discussed the situation in the educational process in the country, possibilities for reforms in that sphere and taking concrete steps to strengthen trust between communities, reads the press release.
