Spain win inaugural marathon race walk mixed relay at Paris Games

Paris, 7 August 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Spain won gold on Wednesday in the inaugural Olympics marathon race walk mixed relay at the Paris Games.

The Spanish duo of Alvaro Martin and Maria Perez finished the 42.195-kilometre course in 2 hours 50 minutes 31 seconds, 0.51s ahead of Brian Daniel Pintado and Glenda Morejon, who claimed Ecuador's third silver medal in Games history.

Bronze went to Australian duo of Rhydian Cowley and Jemima Montag.

Martin was third at the 2024 World Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya, but his partner back then was Laura Garcia-Caro.

World championships winners Italy, who then claimed a surprise victory with Valentina Trapletti and Francesco Fortunato, were sixth in Paris with Massimo Stano and Antonella Palmisano.

The new mixed relay featured 25 teams, each comprising one man and one woman, who completed the marathon distance in four legs of approximately equal distance.
