Snow won't disrupt Vevchani carnival, mayor says

Vevchani, 12 January 2025 (MIA) — Vevchani is all set for its traditional masked carnival taking place on its streets Jan. 13-14 and the heavy snow will not deter carnival goers from showing up, Vevchani Mayor Spase Kochovski said.

MIA spoke to Mayor Kochovski ahead of the Sunday concert headlined by Zabranjeno pushenje, along with Pajak and Area, that will kick off the event.

The snow cover in Vevchani was about 20 cm this morning as road crews were clearing the streets.

"We do not expect any obstacles to holding the carnival," Kochovski told MIA's correspondent.

"The stage is ready, the surrounding area is being cleared of snow drifts and visitors will be able to have good fun and enjoy Vevchani," he said.

According to organizers, the Vevchani Carnival is about 15 centuries old. As is tradition, many carnival masks would be inspired by recent political events. The masks are usually kept top secret until the parade.

Ljubojna, Naum Petreski, Vevchani Bagpipe and Drums Orchestra, Pero Beli and Koki Bioritam will take the stage on Jan. 13.

The carnival ends with its traditional burning of the masks on Jan. 14. mr/
