Tetovo, 29 August 2023 (MIA) – Smoky stench still wafts from the landfill that burst into flames eight days ago near Tetovo's Volkovija, locals said.

"The stench and smoke are not as bad as the day of the fire, but they can still be felt and it is difficult to breathe," residents told MIA's Tetovo correspondent.

Recent drone photos and videos made by the international TV network Al Jazeera show smoke still rising from the landfill.

Tetovo's firefighting unit said they have sent out firefighting crews in the meantime to intervene as needed.

The fire broke out on the night between Aug. 21 and 22.

The State Environment Inspectorate has issued fines of EUR 9,000 for the Eco-Living company in Chergane and EUR 500 for the person responsible. It also issued an order for them to move the waste from Volkovija to the Rusino landfill within 90 days. ssh/mr
