Bratislava, 24 November 2021 (dpa/MIA) — Slovakia is set for a two-week nationwide lockdown to fight the coronavirus, Vice Prime Minister Richard Sulik said after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The lockdown is set to begin on Thursday. No exemptions are planned for people who have been vaccinated, contrary to earlier plans, Sulik told news agency TASR. Schools, however, are due to remain open, with regular testing for covid. People will be able to keep going to work, but compulsory testing is due to begin on Monday. All other restaurants and shops are to be closed, aside from those selling essential items, Sulik said. Slovakia announced a record level of more than 10,000 new covid infections on Wednesday, with 10,315 cases, in a population of 5.5 million. Sulik also said that his party had insisted schools remain open, otherwise threatening a veto in the coalition, even though the measure runs counter to the national council of experts' recommendations. The education minister is also from his party.
