Skopje, 29 August 2024 (MIA) - Thirty members of the Skopje City Council voted in favor of the draft-decision to adopt the programme on additional activities of the "Komunalna Higiena" waste disposal public enterprise for the period between 1 September and 31 December 2024.

Prior to the vote, Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska responded to council members' claims over the amount of waste across the city, expressing concern that institutions did not proceed with sanctioning illicit waste disposal, noting there are ten municipalities within Skopje, which have 10 inspectorates with municipal inspectors and attendants, as well as the State Environmental Inspectorate, the Ministry of Interior etc.

"This is a very serious situation. We cannot clean everything even if we engage the Army. We are the only ones who proceed in these cases by issuing fines and sanctions," said Arsovska and added that responsibility should be shared with all those that have jurisdiction in the field.

On the hiring of seasonal workers, she said a more sustainable solution should be found so these people are employed by the City of Skopje because they are needed.

"Do not look for excuses. You did not vote for this programme for eight months," said Arsovska and blamed the council members for the situation in the city.
