New York, 11 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) - A helicopter crashed into the Hudson River off Manhattan on Thursday, killing six people on board, including three children and the pilot, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
The aircraft, a Bell 206, was reportedly carrying a Spanish family visiting the city when it went down near the New Jersey shore for reasons still under investigation.
The helicopter had taken off from downtown Manhattan in the afternoon and was flying a typical tourist route when the pilot apparently lost control.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene with boats, but none of the passengers survived. Footage shared online showed the helicopter falling steeply into the water, fuelling speculation that the aircraft may have broken apart mid-air. Federal aviation officials have launched an investigation.
"The footage of the accident is horrendous," wrote US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform. "Announcements as to exactly what took place, and how, will be made shortly," he added.
Helicopters are a common sight in New York, ferrying tourists and business travellers alike. The city has long debated their safety and noise impact, especially following past crashes.
In May 2019, a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River and another later hit the roof of a high-rise building and caught fire.
