Skopje, 13 February 2022 (MIA) – Just institutions, defining the status of single-parent families, financial support and free participation in higher education for children of single parents are some of the demands of the single parents who took to the streets on Sunday, marching in downtown Skopje under the theme “The issue of single parents should not be a taboo”, to voice their dissatisfaction with state institutions. The march started at the Woman Warrior Park, and ended at the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy where some of the participants voiced the problems they commonly face. According to them, the march was a result of a long silence by state institutions. “We decided to raise our voices and publicly demand our rights, and at least for a moment show what it is like to be both a mother and a father at the same time, and trust us – it’s not easy at all,” they said. “That is why we demand that authorities provide financial support for each and every single parent because, particularly now that we’re facing large hikes in the prices of products, a family can’t get by on just one salary, let alone see the month through.” Doroti Pachkova, founder of the non-profit organization One Can!, highlighted the issue of defining the status of single parenting. “Our struggle is almost a decade long. After all the legal mechanisms we have used, this has remained as something we haven’t done so far. We take to the streets on behalf of every single mother and single-parent family and we seek support from state institutions. The ignorance must end. We demand defining the status of single parenting, as well as treatment based on status, not impossibility,” said Pachkova. The march was organized by One Can!
