Skopje, 11 December 2023 (MIA) - The tender file for the construction of a central landfill in Sveti Nikole and waste transfer stations for the east and northeast is in the final stages of preparation, Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Kaja Shukova said on Monday. 

"We expect the tender for the construction of a central landfill in Sveti Nikole and waste transfer stations to be published by the end of the year, or January at the latest. It is a financial package worth around EUR 40 million, for the east and northeast only, which includes procurement of equipment, i.e. bins, trash containers, and vehicles," Shukova told reporters during a visit to Kochani.

The financial package, according to her, also foresees closure of municipal landfills.

"Lot 1, i.e. the first tender is in the implementation phase. Some of the landfills have started to close down, and waste from the smaller landfills is currently being transferred to the large ones. The construction of a central station in Sveti Nikole and transfer station where waste will be brought are the final phase," Shukova noted.

This, she added, is the first serious waste management project in North Macedonia. "We will not stop here, we will continue doing so in other regions with the help of a new loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development which will cover five more regions in the country," Shukova said. ssh/nn/
