Skopje, 30 May 2023 (MIA) - Minister for Environment and Physical Planning Kaja Shukova met Tuesday with Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, Artur Lorkowski, who informed about the current and future challenges of the countries in the region that share the same challenges, especially in the implementation of the decarbonisation roadmap and the carbon border adjustment mechanism.
With the adoption of the Decarbonisation Roadmap in 2021, the contracting parties committed to adopting technical rules related to monitoring, reporting and verifying emissions, and developing a necessary institutional framework that could facilitate the implementation of a mechanism for an emissions trading system (ETS) based on the EU ETS. Additionally, the upcoming introduction of the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism foresees the possibility of third counties being exempted from its application (in the energy sector) if certain conditions are met. Those conditions include the introduction of carbon pricing, and implementing ETS with a price equivalent to EU ETS by 2030, the Ministry said in a press release.
Minister Shukova thanked the Energy Community for the support, especially for the carbon tax included in the law on climate action, and stated that the question requires an inter-institutional approach respecting the principle of just transition. ssh/ik/
