Shukova: BRT system to transport 65,000 passengers daily

Skopje, 17 October 2025 (MIA) - SDSM Skopje mayor candidate Kaja Shukova has told 360 Degrees that the biggest priority in her programme is the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system - fast and environment-friendly public transport that will solve traffic jams and pollution in the capital.

"Skopje must have an operational public transport. The BRT project is ready, the funds have been secured, and the first 13km-long line from Gjorche Petrov to Aerodrom can be completed by the start of 2028," says Shukova.

She adds this is the most significant infrastructure project in Skopje in decades, because the BRT system would ensure transport of over 65,000 passengers daily.

"This solution will give Skopje a public transport that befits a modern European city - no delays, no pollution and clean mobility for all," adds Shukova.

In parallel with the construction of the first line, she notes, the second north-south route will be designed, thus connecting all parts of the city, with new eco-buses procured every year to upgrade the system.

"This is a project that will change Skopje forever, give it a new pulse, fast rhythm and clean future," says Shukova.

She announces a complete reform of the waste management system, ensuring a sustainable and transparent model for Skopje similar to other European cities.

"Citizens will have a clear schedule on the type of waste that is being collected. For example, solid waste on Monday, plastic and paper on Tuesday, biodegradable on Wednesday. This will ensure order and develop habits for waste selection," says Shukova.

According to her, new trucks and bins would be procured in the first year, along with a digital platform at which citizens can follow the schedule and report irregularities.

The Drisla landfill will be in the focus, introducing a de-gasification system, collection of extract and pollution control.

"This is a step towards real circular economy, waste would no longer be a problem but a reused resource. This will result in cleaner air, healthy soil and a city that thinks responsibly," says Shukova.
