Security forces use tear gas as fresh demonstrations called in Sudan
Security forces have used tear gas on thousands of protesters demonstrating against the military's continued participation in the government of Sudan. The Sudanese Medical Committee reported on Thursday that live ammunition was used in the Omdurman district of the capital Khartoum. Local hospitals were treating injured people, some of whom were in critical condition, the medical committee said. According to broadcaster al-Jazeera, the demonstrators gathered in front of Khartoum's presidential palace to demand that the military transfer power to a civilian government. Both the internet and the mobile phone network were blocked in large parts of the country since early on Thursday. On October 25, the military took power in a coup, causing international condemnation. After international and domestic pressure, the ousted prime minister Abdullah Hamdok was reinstated on November 21. According to an agreement between Hamdok and military ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Hamdok was allowed to form a Cabinet with civilian representatives. However, al-Burhan, as leader of the Sovereign Council, jointly heads the new transitional government with Hamdok. The Sovereign Council also includes representatives of the military, who are accused of serious human rights violations and corruption. Since then, there have been repeated protests against the continued involvement of the military in Sudan's government, and accusations of treason levelled at Hamdok.
