Brussels, 19 December 2024 (dpa/MIA) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to US President-elect Donald Trump on the phone on the fringes of an EU summit in Brussels to discuss the war in Ukraine.
The two agreed "that Russia's war against Ukraine has been going on for far too long and that it is important to get on the path to a fair, just and sustainable peace as soon as possible," German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said after the call.
The German chancellor reaffirmed his intention to continue supporting Ukraine in its defence against Russia for as long as necessary, Hebestreit said.
Thursday's phone call was Scholz's second exchange with Trump since his election victory in early November. Trump is to take office on January 20.
The fact that Scholz has already spoken to the future US president twice before he takes office is not customary.
