Skopje, 18 September 2021 (MIA) – The World Marrow Donor Day (WMDD) is celebrated globally on Saturday under the slogan “Thank you, donor!” to honor blood stem cell donors who have stepped up to save someone’s life. At the University Clinic of Hematology in Skopje, which has joined the celebration of this day, 190 transplants have been performed over a period of three years, including seven haploid transplants and 22 transplants from an unrelated donor. “All patients deserve a chance to be treated by stem cell transplant. Just a few steps are enough to save someone’s life,” said Head of the Hematology Clinic, Irina Panovska – Stavridis. “A transplant is the only cure for many hematological diseases. Donating bone marrow is a completely safe procedure that can save people’s lives.” The results of the treatment are identical to those of the European transplant centers and are reported to the database of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation  (EBMT). The Hematology Clinic’s transplant team has been a member of EBMT since 2003. Any healthy person aged 18 to 50 can register as a donor in the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The World Marrow Donor Day (WMDD) is an initiative of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) – the largest organization that promotes best practices for the benefit of stem cell donors and transplant patients. The Macedonian Registry of Voluntary Donors at the Institute for Immunology is a recognized member of this international organization.
