Residents in southern Japan urged to seek safety in face of typhoon

Strong winds and heavy rainfall strafed southern Japan on Sunday as Typhoon Nanmadol incurred property damage and left a string of injuries in its path.

Thousands of residents had to seek safety and train and plane traffic was limited due to the storm. The southern island of Kyushu bore the brunt of the storm, but broadcaster NHK only spoke of injuries, no deaths. The country's weather officials warned that danger levels were high due to the unusually strong winds, high waves and landslides in the storm's path. The prefecture of Kagoshima is under the strictest typhoon warning issued by Japanese meteorologists. Thousands of people there have headed to emergency shelters, some even spilling over into the neighbouring prefecture, Miyazaki. Across Kyushu, tens of thousands of households reported power outages. There are concerns that the typhoon could now head north-east and threatened Tokyo.
