Skopje, 5 April 2024 (MIA) - Strengthening intercultural dialogue, inclusion and gender equality are the key contributions from the regional swimming competition of intellectually disabled athletes that is taking place on April 5-7 at the Sports Centre Boris Trajkovski in Skopje.

EU Ambassador David Geer said the regional event brings together intellectually disabled swimmers, showcases their skills and celebrates diversity.

"Events like this reaffirm out joint commitment to break down barriers and create a more inclusive society where every individual is appreciated and their talents are fully realized. Above all, it is a fun occasion for both participants and supporters," said Geer at a press conference organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in North Macedonia, in cooperation with the Special Olympics, EU Delegation and the UN Resident Coordinator in North Macedonia.

In addition to North Macedonia, he noted, the event includes other countries as well.

For UN Resident Coordinator in North Macedonia, Rossana Dudziak, sports mean a lot more than just achievements.

"It is the best functional platform for bringing together people from different ethnic groups, nations, cultures, religions and backgrounds," Dudziak stressed.

According to her, sport is a vital mechanism for breaking down existing barriers between different groups, regardless of what those differences might be.

The sports matches will be held during the weekend, qualifying races will take place on the morning of April 6, and the final matches, awards ceremony and closing of the event will be held in the afternoon on April 7.

The goal of the event is to promote awareness for inclusion, equal opportunities and regional cooperation between young people through sport, as a basis for creating common values and future. It provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents and celebrate diversity through sport and friendship.

The United Nations Youth for Inclusion, Equality and Trust (2022-2024) project is dedicated to fostering constructive narratives, intercultural dialogue and gender equality between young people in the Western Balkans. With the help of various activities, including sports, culture, civic education and community projects, the initiative aims to foster mutual understanding and trust across the region, while fighting against negative propaganda, hate speech and digital violence. ssh/ik/
