Rama: Power cuts possible, citizens to start saving electricity
Tirana, 24 July 2022 (MIA) — Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama warned the Albanian public of possible power cuts because Albania, he said, did not have a sufficient electrical power supply. According to MIA’s Tirana correspondent, Rama said the Albanian government had prepared an emergency plan for saving electricity, which included power cuts if necessary. Urging citizens to save electricity, Rama pointed to the example of Germany, where he said citizens were highly aware of the electricity crisis so they started taking shorter and less frequent showers. The nation’s daily electricity consumption is about 25 million kilowatt hours. In favorable hydrological conditions, these needs are met by the three hydropower plants on the Drim River: Komani, Fierze, and Vau i Dejes. Due to the drought and rising electricity prices, the Albanian government in March issued an order to cut back on public lighting. mr/
