Qatar and Egypt slam global community, call for probe into Gaza war

Riyadh, 11 November 2023 (dpa/MIA) -  Egypt and Qatar have criticized the world community and the UN Security Council calling for an international probe into the violations committed by Israel in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia is hosting an extraordinary joint Islamic-Arab summit in Riyadh on Saturday to discuss the Israel-Hamas war that has been raging for over a month.

Addressing the summit, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi said on Saturday that the international community, especially the UN Security Council, "bears a direct responsibility to work seriously and resolutely" to help the Palestinian people in Gaza.

He called for "an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip ... without restrictions or conditions."

"The UN should send teams to immediately investigate Israeli claims used to justify attacks on hospitals," Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said as he was addressing the summit.

Originally, only the 22 members of the Arab League were to partake but the meeting was later expanded to include the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an association of 57 mostly Muslim-majority states to which the Arab League countries belong.
