Putin hints at arms control deals if Ukraine war is resolved

Moscow, 14 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin signalled on Thursday that Moscow could agree to new arms control treaties - but only if the war in Ukraine is resolved.
His comments came, according to the Kremlin, during a preparatory meeting for his one-on-one talks with US President Donald Trump, set for Friday in Anchorage, Alaska.
Putin said Washington was making "quite energetic and sincere efforts" to end the fighting in Ukraine and reach agreements "in the interests of all parties involved."
This, he added, could create long-term conditions for peace in Europe and globally "if we move to the next stages of agreements in the field of strategic offensive arms control."
By "strategic offensive arms," Putin was referring to intercontinental nuclear weapons. Nearly all nuclear arms agreements between Washington and Moscow have now lapsed or been abandoned, leaving the sector largely unregulated.
Putin has been waging a full-scale war against Ukraine for almost three and a half years. Trump has said he wants to end the conflict, though it remains unclear how he would persuade the Kremlin to do so.
Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said the summit would focus mainly on the Ukraine war but would also address other issues.
