PSG oust Liverpool to advance in CL with Barca, Bayern and Inter
- Paris Saint-Germain knocked top seeds Liverpool out of the Champions League on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals, 4-1 on penalties thanks to the heroics from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Berlin, 12 March 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Paris Saint-Germain knocked top seeds Liverpool out of the Champions League on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals, 4-1 on penalties thanks to the heroics from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italy international saved spot kicks from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, while Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and teenager Desire Doue converted for PSG who remain in the hunt for a first title in the elite event.
The last 16 tie was locked at 1-1 after PSG had cancelled out a 1-0 home defeat from last week through Dembele in the 12th minute at Anfield.
"They played better than us here, but I think my team at Anfield, in a special stadium, showed great personality and character," PSG coach Luis Enrique told Prime Video. "I think it shows clearly the team we are."
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said: "It was totally there for Liverpool, with what we showed in Paris. Unfortunately were out on penalties and that is the reality."
Barcelona meanwhile beat Benfica 3-1 in Spain and 4-1 on aggregate as 17-year-old Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to score and assist in one Champions League match, while Raphinha got a brace.
Harry Kane scored and set up Alphonso Davies as six-time winners Bayern won 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen to take the all-German tie 5-0 from both games.
Bayern next meet Inter who completed a 4-1 aggregate success over Dutch side Feyenoord with a 2-1 home victory from Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu's penalty.
PSG will face Aston Villa or Club Brugge while Barca take on last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund or Lille.
On Wednesday, Villa host Brugge 3-1 up, Lille and Dortmund are tied at 1-1, holders Real Madrid defend a 2-1 lead at crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid, while Arsenal are at home against PSV after thrashing them 7-1 in Eindhoven.
PSG triumph at Anfield
Liverpool, top seeds by virtue of their league stage top spot, started all-out against PSG after their very lucky win in Paris as Mohamed Salah had a shot blocked by Nuno Mendes and then curled wide left.
PSG survived and levelled the tie against the flow of play when Dembele pounced on a cross from Bradley Barcola when defender Ibrahima Konate and goalkeeper Alisson Becker failed to clear.
Liverpool tried to hit back but PSG remained highly dangerous as Becker needed big saves one on one against Barcola and Dembele before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled just off target.
The hosts thought they had levelled from Dominik Szoboszlai five minutes after the restart but Luis Diaz was offside in the build-up, and Liverpool substitute Jarell Quansah headed against the left post.
PSG almost stole a second in extra time from Dembele who was denied by Becker in the 109th.
In the shoot-out, Salah converted the first for the Premier League leaders but Donnarumma then broke English hearts like four years ago when he saved twice as well to give Italy the Euro title in the final against England.
"It was the best game of football I have ever been involved in. It was an incredible performance," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said. "We ran out of luck after last week."
Barca show from Raphinha and Yamal
In Barcelona, Raphinha volleyed the opener into the far right corner off Yamal's failed attempt to put the hosts on top early on.
Benfica were level two minutes later from Nicolas Otamendi's header but teenage sensation Yamal restored the lead with a curling shot into the left corner, and Raphinha wrapped up matters on another classy Barca attack in the 43rd.
"My team-mates make things very much easier for me. It was a good goal but sometimes these things come off and sometimes they don't. For the assist, I tried to shoot and Raphinha turned it into a goal," Yamal said.
Raphina had already scored the 1-0 winner in the first leg in Lisbon, and also twice in Barca's memorable 5-4 victory in their league stage duel at Benfica in January.
"This competition is the most difficult trophy to win - but we can do it," said coach Hansi Flick, who can get a second treble after achieving it with Bayern in 2020.
Kane's Bayern complete the job
Bayern almost drew first blood from Harry Kane's low shot which was saved well by Lukas Hradecky, before Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman aimed inches left and right, respectively.
Leverkusen struggled without their injured young star Florian Wirtz, and the tie was over for them for good when Kane pounced in a scramble off Joshua Kimmich's free-kick in the 52nd for his 10th goal of the competition.
Kane then set up Davies to volley the second in the 71st as Bayern remained on course towards the final in their home stadium on May 31.
"We knew we had to be at a top level to beat them and played really well twice. We have to take that into the coming games and the next round of the Champions League," Bayern's Jamal Musiala told Prime Video.
"We all want to get to the final, but tonight we’ve taken a step, and we need to take another against Inter."
Inter through
Next up for Bayern are Inter, who wasted no time at San Siro and led 1-0 after eight minutes when Marcus Thuram beat two defenders and fired into the top right corner.
Mehdi Taremi should have added a second after a one-two with Thuram but only managed a tame shot at goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther but instead Feyenoord were level shortly before half-time from Jakub Moder's penalty after he was tripped by Hakan Calhanoglu.
Calhanoglu made amends when he put Inter on top again in the 51st, also from the spot awarded after Thomas Beelen brought down Taremi, and Thuram hit the crossbar before being subbed off.
