Position on Prespa Agreement being obstacle for cooperation between Turkey and North Macedonia naive, says Greek gov’t spokesperson
Athens, 19 August 2021 (MIA) – The position that the Prespa Agreement would be an obstacle for cooperation between Turkey and North Macedonia proved to be naive, Greek government spokesperson Ioannis Ikonomou said Thursday in reference to the agreement for military cooperation recently signed between Skopje and Ankara, MIA reports from Athens.
In regard to the Greek government’s position on the agreement signed in Istanbul, Ikonomou stressed that both North Macedonia and Turkey are NATO members.
“As you know, Greece signed its own defence agreement with North Macedonia. Turkey and North Macedonia are both NATO member states. We’re monitoring the situation and know that the agreement was signed in Istanbul on the margins of the defence industry fair. The position that the Prespa Agreement would be an obstacle for cooperation between Turkey and our neighbor proved to be naive in practice,” Ikonomou said.
Former Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Katrougalos, who is currently serving as Syriza’s foreign policy authority, also commented on the agreement, tweeting that “such agreements with Greece are waiting to be adopted for two years, with no mention of new ones.”
