Poland reports highest daily Covid-19 death toll since April
Warsaw, 29 December 2021 (dpa/MIA) - Poland has reported the highest number of coronavirus deaths in one day since April.
Within the past 24 hours, 794 people died with the virus, the Ministry of Health in Warsaw announced on Wednesday.
In the same period, there were 15,571 confirmed new infections.
According to the EU health agency, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), only 55.1 per cent of the population in Poland are considered fully immunized against Covid-19. Just over 16 per cent of the population have received a booster jab.
According to the Polish authorities, the current coronavirus wave is almost entirely due to the Delta variant.
At least 25 cases of the fast-spreading Omicron variant have also been detected in the country.
As an exception, nightclubs that have been closed since mid-December are allowed to open on New Year's Eve in Poland, with limits on unvaccinated visitor numbers.
