Petkov: Bulgaria to expel 70 diplomats from Russian Embassy in Sofia
Sofia, 28 June 2022 (MIA) – Outgoing Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said Tuesday that the country’s security services have identified that 70 diplomats were linked to Russian services and worked against the interests of Bulgaria.
Petkov has congratulated the Bulgarian services and the Foreign Ministry for a job well done, MIA’s Sofia correspondent reports.
The 70 diplomats have taken on various official roles at the Russian Embassy but were involved in inconsistent activities, said the Bulgarian PM.
“This is in no way aggression against the Russian people. Anyone who works against Bulgaria’s interests will be expelled back to the country they came from,” PM Petkov said.
“A large part of them have worked for foreign services and their diplomatic role was just a cover,” he added.
On Sunday, said Petkov, we expect a full 70-seat airplane to fly back to Moscow.
According to him, when foreign governments are trying to meddle in Bulgaria’s internal affairs, Sofia has institutions designated to counter such type of activities.
