Parliament to debate on appointment of Trajko Slaveski as central bank governor

Parliament to debate on appointment of Trajko Slaveski as central bank governor

Skopje, 28 May 2025 (MIA) — Parliament at its 52nd plenary session will debate Wednesday on the proposal to appoint Trajko Slaveski governor of the National Bank of North Macedonia, replacing current Governor Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska.

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova submitted the proposal to Parliament, which is set to vote to elect Slaveski central bank governor with a simple majority of 61 votes.

Currently heading the Skopje City Council, Slaveski teaches at the state university's Faculty of Economics in Skopje. He also served as finance minister from 2006 to 2009.

Slaveski will have a seven-year term as governor.

VMRO-DPMNE said they would support Slaveski. The opposition party SDSM said they would not vote for him because they considered his nomination an act of political partisanship and not based on merit. They said expertise had been the criterion for appointing a governor until now.

Angelovska-Bezhoska’s term as governor ends Thursday. She took office in 2018. Before her, Dimitar Bogov served as governor (2011-2018), preceded by Petar Goshev (2004–2011), Ljube Trpeski (1997–2004) and Borko Stanoevski (1986–1997). mr/
