Overnight tit-for-tat as Israel, Iran continue to attack each other

Tel Aviv, 19 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The Israeli military early on Thursday said that it has carried out more airstrikes against Iran.

The targets were the capital Tehran and other areas of the country were attacked, the armed forces said at around 4 am on Thursday (0100 GMT). Earlier, Iran had fired several rockets at Israel, according to the Israeli military. There were initially no reports of casualties from the mutual attacks.

Shortly afterwards, the Israeli armed forces called on residents of areas in the Iranian cities of Arak and Khondab to seek safety. The military said it would attack military facilities in the area.

The region is home to a heavy water reactor. Heavy water is used to cool nuclear reactors but also produces plutonium as a by-product, which can potentially be used for nuclear weapons.

Since the start of the war last week, a total of 639 people have been killed in Iran, including at least 263 civilians, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), a US-based group of Iranian activists. The organization relies on official data and local reports.

In Israel, where countless shelters are available as places of refuge, there have so far been 24 deaths, all of whom were civilians, according to the Israeli side.
