Over 600 killed by earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan, Taliban says

Islamabad, 1 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) – At least 610 people have died and over 1,300 are injured after a series of earthquakes struck Afghanistan's eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

Kunar, the worst-affected province, saw many homes completely destroyed, Taliban Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Qani told dpa.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a powerful magnitude 6.0 quake at a shallow depth of 8.0 kilometres, which was followed by several lower-intensity aftershocks.

In October 2024, a series of quakes with magnitudes of up to 6.3 rocked Afghanistan's western province of Herat. According to the United Nations, the quakes killed around 1,500 people and injured nearly 2,000 others. Dozens of villages were completely flattened, and people took to camping out in the open for fear of further tremors.
