Over 30 injured after irritant gas released at German school

Frankfurt, 5 November 2025 (dpa/MIA) - More than 30 pupils and teachers are believed to have been injured by irritant gas released at a school in south-western Germany, police said on Wednesday.

Twenty-nine pupils and three teachers suffered irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes, according to a statement.

Some of them were brought to hospital while others were treated on site in the town of Spiesen-Elversberg, which is located near the French border to the south-west of Frankfurt.

Police are still searching for a suspect, with the exact type of gas released also yet to be determined.

Some 170 people had been inside the school at the time of the incident which took place at around 11:30 am (1030 GMT).
