Osmani: Consolidating Western Balkans our historic responsibility
Sofia, 26 April 2022 (MIA) — Still no solution to the open issues between Bulgaria and North Macedonia has been found to be acceptable for both sides, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bujar Osmani said in Sofia where he took part in the "The EU Meets the Balkans" forum on relations between the European Union and the region. According to MIA’s Sofia correspondent, Foreign Minister Osmani confirmed that talks between the countries were ongoing and urged politicians to leave historical issues to the bilateral historical commission. “We have a historic responsibility to consolidate the region,” Osmani said. “It is in the Republic of Bulgaria’s strategic interest that the region be stable and European.” Asked if North Macedonia would insist on changes to the Bulgarian Declaration so that Sofia could lift its veto on North Macedonia’s starting talks with the EU, Osmani highlighted the importance of Bulgaria's position towards the negotiations. “It is important to return to the European and Euro-Atlantic course,” he said. “Bulgaria has supported the enlargement process ever since it joined the European Union. Enlargement is not only in our interest. It is also in the geostrategic interest of the entire EU," Osmani said. Regarding reports that Albania would seek decoupling from North Macedonia on the EU path, North Macedonia’s FM said Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had been quoted incorrectly in the media. According to Osmani, Rama had said he would ask the Albanian citizens about the possibility, and not that Albania had already decided it wanted to split its EU membership bid from North Macedonia’s. mr/
